DISCUSSION GAMBITS

Gambits are TACTICS we use in conversation to do things like showing agreement or disagreement, taking turns, maintaining the conversation alive, etc. If you want to sound more like a polite, educated native speaker, you should take more advantage of them when you discuss, debate, etc.

This document presents a summary of the most common expressions followed by a more comprehensive list, sorted by functions.

Remember that in the exam one of the assessment criteria in the interaction part of the oral test is your use of strategies to make the conversation communicative, fluent, appropriate and polite.
